About Our Founder
Ralph A. Mattiola Born in1921, Ralph A. Mattiola was a strong, stout, athletic youth
(nicknamed “Beef”) who went on to play and captain his college football team at Franklin and Marshall College from 1940 to 1942. His college days were disrupted by his enlistment in the U.S. Army
and, in 1942, was deployed to England for D-Day preparations. Ralph
was promoted to Sergeant prior to landing in Harve, France
approximately 1 month after D-Day as part of the 720th Field Artillery
Battalion. On their way to Berlin, Ralph and his company liberated
several concentration camps and French towns. At the conclusion
of the war, Ralph was designated Mayor of Haag, Switzerland where
he performed this function until the town was stabilized by its own
newly-elected mayor. Ralph was honorably discharged from the
Army in 1945 and returned to Franklin and Marshall to resume his
academic and athletic careers. He received All American honors for
his outstanding play as an offensive guard and defensive linebacker
and was inducted into the Franklin and Marshall Sports Hall of Fame
in 1974.
Rose Mary met her husband, Ralph, in 1945 and has been the
driving force for both companies for many years. Together, they
raised two sons, Robert and Steven, current President and Executive
Vice President of Mattiola Construction. Rosemary acted as both
companies’ bookkeeper and controller until her retirement in 1990.
